About the Department

The Department of Geography started its journey in 1958 as a General subject. It obtained approval from Kalyani University for introducing Geography as Honours subject in 2003. After Bengali and English, there is high demand amongst students for opting Geography as Honours subject. There are at present 75 sanctioned seats for Honours and 38 sanctioned seats for Programme course. At present there are Two Assistant Professors and One SACT in the Department. The department has well spacious and well-equipped laboratories required for U.G. level. Students feel comfortable while working in the laboratories as they get sufficient equipments, specimens and instruments for their works. Field Surveys are carried out on semester basis in different places having geographically importance.

The department has very high reputation in every sphere of the field of geography and other co-curricular activities. A good number of alumni of this department have become luminaries in their respective fields of teaching,researches, banking and administration.

Besides teaching, the Department organizes class wise seminar, Special Lectures, group discussion, Excursion, field study and workshop. The students can express their geographical knowledge through their writing in the wall Magazines and model making and teachers guide them properly in this regard. Above all, the faculty members are always ready to render all possible assistance and guidance to students within and outside the campus as and when required. All the faculty members and students share a cordial bond with each other.

 Apart from lecture method of teaching, the teaching faculties also use ppt and audio-visual medium to teach. Reference books and handouts are provided to the students as per their requirement.

 Field work is organized every year for 4th Semester (Hons.&Prog.) and 5th Semester (Hons.&Prog.) and students according to their syllabus.

29. SWOC Analysis

A. Strength:

(i)Regular, attentive and disciplined students are able to make classroom teaching enjoyable for the teachers and effective for the students.

(ii) Well equipped department including laboratory facilities, instruments and geographical specimens.

(iii) All the teaching and non-teaching staffs are dedicated to the department. Teachers always encourage their students in various co-curricular activities for the overall development of the students.

B. Weaknesses:

(i)Shortage of classroom especially for practical classes.

(ii) Lack in smart classroom with ICT facilities.

(iii)Student -Teacher ratio is very high.

(iv) Student-Computer ratio is not satisfactory.

(v) Lack of store room for instruments and specimens.</p.

C. Opportunities:

(i) Improvement and extension of the existing Computer Laboratory. (ii)Publication of departmental journal with ISSN may open up opportunities for students andteachers to make the best use of their potential. (iii)Regular arrangement of certificate/Add on courses related to geography. D. Challenges: (i)To encourage students for consulting the reference books written in English from college and departmental library. (ii) To encourage the students to pursue higher studies and follow diversified fields apart from the Teaching profession. (iii) Student-Teacher ratio is very high.
