About the Department

The Department of Philosophy has got its foundation and levels set straight and high from the very moment since it’s establishment and beyond to provide quality and affordable higher education to female students, thereby including the underprivileged sections of the society. Our department has started it’s journey as an Honours Degree course from 1958 along with pass course with the affiliation of Calcutta University. Now it is affiliated with the Kalyani University since 1999. From there on, this department has been served by distinguished teachers who are now not only renowned but also have been eminent in their background of research and other external activities. Their motto has always been to help their students learn to become ‘human’ first and then to achieve their goals in life, thanks to them that they believed that the knowledge of philosophy would be the best weapon to achieve so. To make our nation the best among all, philosophical knowledge whatsoever should be practised in life no matter what. Through many generations, teachers of this esteemed department have been trying their level best and today, we are striving to maintain this tradition and legacy of our predecessors.

The Department of Philosophy has a glorious past filled with memories and achievements all throughout, since the establishment of our esteemed and beloved college. Many eminent scholars have served here as our faculty. Several students of our Department have earned places of importance in the society. Today many of our alumni have stepped into different spheres of life and established themselves in prestigious positions. Now this department operates with it’s full strength of faculty and passion to successfully achieve it’s aim of social and individual well-being for all and serves the women of our society, many of them whom are first-generation degree-seekers, spreading higher education to the financially unable members of the humankind, especially to the women members of these domains. The high teacher-to-student ratio is another noteworthy feature that enables the teaching-learning process to be more effective and sustainable in this department. As an obvious outcome of the above, a gradual rate of progression has been observed among the students and why not!

Currently, the Department is following the CBCS curriculum on the basis of the UGC guidelines since 2018. However, apart from academic commitments, the department has arranged a wall magazine "synthesis" programme where teachers and students both participate actively for symbiotic benefits. Students take equal interest in participating sports and involving themselves in various other extra-curricular activities only at our allowance and pleasure directed towards their all-round development and benefit. We the teachers of the Philosophy department, guide our beloved students towards developing their talent, skill and craft in various fields by necessitating them in debates, seminars and group discussions in the classroom itself, not to mention activities organized by other departments and foreign organizations, sponsored by UGC and ICPR. Regular parent-teacher interactions are held for the guardians to learn about the academic and non-academic progress and hindrance of their wards. Teacher-student relationship is the watchword of our department.
