About the Department

Since 1846 , Krishnagar city has been a renowned name when it comes to higher education . In 1958, Krishnagar Women’s College was founded to take women’s education in the post independent era , to the next level. The wide horizon of the syllabus assured to accelerate the subject ‘Bangabhasha o Sahitya’ (Bangla Language and Literature’ ) . It has been important in the broader range of socioeconomic sphere along with the educational curriculum. In the then system , colleges were the next stop of students who had passed the ‘School final’ examination . The partition period proliferated the population of students in this side of Bengal. Higher education was recognised to be an important part of life by a huge portion of the population. This situation brought in the demand for more educational institutions, and our college played an important role to tackle this situation . Our college, especially our department, started providing opportunities to the students of the grassroot, which consisted of the first generation woman learners who were mostly from refugee families and economically deprived class ,at that time . The prime shelter of these students was the Bangla Department. Ms. Prabhatee Basu was the first professor of Bangla in our college.

Post school final phase had the chronological order in which one had to pass the Intermediate, Pre University and Higher secondary ( later Ucchyamadhyamik). In that particular curriculum, the subject Bangla was differentiated further into three more courses —‘Bengali’,‘Alternate Bengali’, ‘Special Bengali’. The graduation level consisted of ‘ Bengali ‘ , ‘Elective Bengali’, and ‘Honours in Bengali’. The honours course was introduced to our college in the year 1967 . In the mean time, four other professors were there in our department — Ms. Juthika Chowdhury, Mrs. Reba Sengupta, Mrs. Nivedita Chakrabarty and Dr. Bharati Dutta. It is significant in this context that Ms. Kajali Biswas the second batch honours student later joined our department as professor. Dr. Bharati Dutta was the first professor who had achieved Ph.D from out department.

Ms. Kajali Biswas joined the vacant seat of Ms. Prabhatee Basu . After voluntary retirement of Mrs. Nivedita Chakrabarty, Mrs. Mala Ghosh joined in her position. Mrs. Malati Mondal , now the departmental head joined after Mrs. Reba Sengupta’s retirement . Dr. Pranati Sinha joined after Ms. Juthika Chowdhury’s retirement. Suman Bhattacharya joined after Dr. Bharati Dutta’s retirement. After Ms. Kajali Biswas’ retirement , Mr. Prakashchandra Mondal joined . Mrs. Sreeparna Dutta joined in the vacant post of Dr. Pranati Sinha. Dr. Pranati Sinha achieved her Ph.D while serving her time in this college. Suman Bhattacharya had also achieved this degree. Mrs. Sreeparna Dutta is now prepared to submit her paper for the Ph.D.

Krishnagar is a city of great cultural heritage . But the huge distance of 100kms between Kolkata and Krishnagar can not be denied, which somehow affects the educational privileges of this town . Yet the town tried its best to overcome the hurdles, one of its best known attempt was the women’s college itself. As mentioned earlier the college initially started off with the primary vision of eradicating illiteracy and providing the most wanted shelter to the underprivileged women who were desperate and eager for higher education . The college aimed at covering the horizontal growth of women education, and now it’s certainly the time to capture the peak of vertical growth. From 1968 till 2008 the college served a radius of 25 km as the only women’s college and one of the few colleges which provided Bengali honours course . Back in 1968 there were around 15 seats for Bengali honours, which has been increased to 158 in the present time. In university examinations our department is able to keep a basic level of standard result and gradually our students are now able to score first class , this is a continuing phenomena. The Bengali department has been providing ample support to the students to participate in inter departmental debates, and seminars , for the last two decades. Under the guidance of the department, the students are motivated to express their creative thoughts on the departmental wall magazine . Besides these activities, the department organises various educational excursions.

Some of our notable alumni are Mrs. Gayatri Bandyopadhyay from the batch of 1967 , who worked in Government service . Ms. Gauri Biswas, Ms. Sampa Sarkar ( Gokhale Memorial college), Dr. Atreyee Siddhanta ( Indus college) . In the school education service there are, Mrs. Panchasheela Mazumdar , Ms. Pantha Tarafdar, Ms. Barnali Paul, Ms. Durba Pramanick, Mrs. Satararupa Saha, Ms. Sohini Biswas.

Dr Bharati Dutta’s research topic—Adhunik Bangla Kavitaay Puran-prasanga (Insertion of Mythical Context in Modern Bangla Poems ) was published . Mr. Prakashchandra Mondal’s M.Phil. paper on modern storywriters are also published. Mrs. Sreeparna Dutta is very much regular in her researchoriented publications. Our students like Ms. Panchasheela Majumdar, Dr Atreyee Siddhanta and Ms. Durba Pramanick are regular in their proseworks. We are in the journey in our cerebral grandeur.
