A Brief Introduction:
Department of Chemistry of Krishnagar Women’s College was established in the year 1965 in   Under Graduate level with Pass Course. The Honours course of this Department began it’s journey in year 2010. The college is under CBCS system since 2018, before that the Annual examination system [1+1+1] was prevailed. Student generally come from Krishnagar and adjoining  areas – Tahatta,Karimpur, Nabadwip, Shantipur, Ranaghat, Majdia. Most of the students belong to poorest strata of the society, mainly SC/ ST/ OBC/ Minority communities.

Involvement in Research Activities:
The Teaching faculties have published their research work in various peer reviewed journals. They are continuously enriched them by their research publications
Infrastructure of the Department:
The Department has one designated classroom with ICT facility. It has three laboratories having one organic laboratory, one inorganic laboratory,one Physical and one store cum balance room. The laboratories is well equipped sufficient equipment of CBCS system and two desktops in departmental staff room.With these resources all the faculties endeavor to groom their students to tread the path of success in future.
Financial Assistance Received by the Students:
A large No of number of students receive financial assistance from Government like Kanyasree Scholarship, Vivekananda scholarship etc.

National Seminar Organised by the Department:
The Department of Chemistry organized UGC sponsored two day National Seminar in collaboration with University of Kalyani on 28th and 29th September, 2013.
Teaching Methods Adopted toImprove Student Learning:
(a) Demonstrations through models and experiments.
(b) Black-board and ICT enabled teaching.
(c) Hands on experience with Chem-Draw Software and Internet.
(d) Digital classes on WebEx, google meet platform from home since April 2020, due to Pandemic situation.
(e) From time to time the services of experts in their respective areas on the subject are requisition to impart knowledge to the students on latest developments taking place in the country. Visiting Lectures by eminent Professors of different institutions and University are also organized to keep the student abreast of the time.
(d) Students participate in their classroom seminar.
(e) The college has a good library having sufficient collection of books on different subjects for the benefit of students and teachers.
(f) Students also participate in the National, Regional Seminars, Workshops, Quiz contest and also Webinars which are organized by our college and other colleges.
Our students of Semester II received “Best Poster Prize” on the theme “2019: International Year of the Periodic Table” in the Science Academies Lecture Workshop organized by Krishnagar Govt. College on 18th and 19th January, 2019.
Participation in Institutional Social Responsibility (ISR) and Extension Activities:
(a) Involvement of students in blood donation camp.
(b) Active participation for various environmental issues.
(c) Students occasionally participate in the national and college level Webiner,workshop, Quizcontest.
(d) Students perform their field study on ENVS as a part of their course curriculum.
(e) Students actively participate in their educational tours in every year. In 2022 the students visited the Department of Chemistry, KU as a part of their study tour in order to motivate the students and inculcate the knowledge of theory with practical demonstration.
As a part of the syllabus in theory to show few instruments to the students like Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy and Proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy. 
(f) Every year the students organize Departmental Fresher’s Welcome Ceremony, celebrate Teachers’ Day.
(g) The students publish their wall magazine in every year

(h) The Department of Chemistry observesthe National Science Day in commemoration of Dr. C V Raman.

(i)Every year the students organize Departmental Fresher’s Welcome Ceremony, celebrate Teachers’ Day.
(f) The students of end semester students participate in the student seminar in every year.

STRENGTHS

  • The Honours course was introduced in the year 2010, thereby enable women students of rural areas to study UG Honours course in Chemistry.
  • Well-equipped laboratory with modern equipment.
  • A good library having rich collection of books in Chemistry.
  • Good faculty with committed staff.
  • Mentor mentee relationship  is very strong.

WEAKNESS:

  • Absence of permanent supporting staff i.e. laboratory attendant.
  • Limited scope to higher the services of experts/ professionals to equip the students with the latest developments.

OPPORTUNITIES:

  • The district being large having huge rural population the department has a capability to attract many meritorious students from the district as well as from its neighboring areas.
  • Offers opportunities to students to undertake to practical training in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries in neighboring districts of Howrah, Hooghly and Kolkata.
  • Career counseling to enable students to pursue future course of studies.

CHALLENGES:

  • To make the study of core subjects in science attractive by ensuring public and private investment.
  • To take steps to expand research works in Universities and colleges by appropriate authorities.
  • To percolate research works at the ground level for the benefit of the masses.
  • To disseminate information of the advances of the R&D works.
